"Elizabeth Deull depicts a mystical storybook landscape where children of a new agey spiritual movement are the prophets, communicating with god, nature and the beyond. These paintings depict characters burdened by their incredible lightness of being, translated through a candy coated psychedelic palette and watery brushwork. Her work draws from images of astronomy, astrology, fairy tale, and psychic new age mythology"
(That would be me quoting myself)
I strive to utilize straightforward formalist painting devices to describe visceral Moments where time stops and the mythical, fantastical or the authentic dimensions can almost be touched, straddling between the light and darkness of our ever-elusive quest for happiness, connection and enlightenment. I dig, draw upon and tip my hat to such artists as Peter Doig, Jochen Klein, Kiki Smith, Willem de Kooning, Jenny Saville and Jean-Antoine Watteau, not to mention a continuing love afair with Folk Art and almost anything kids make out of stuff, bric-a-brac and whatnot.
I live, love and draw in South Brooklyn.
I paint in Hell's Kitchen.
I thrive, grow and revel in teaching.
I am inspired by all things heartfelt, by country music, yoga, the call of the road, the lull of the Long Island Sound, sunset on the Gowanus Canal, talking animal movies and misfit toys, Mr. Waits and Mr. Dylan, the wisdom of friends near and far, the awkward, the special and the dreamy, as well as those who don their hearts on their sleeves with more frequency than this world allows for.
I paint and teach with the intent to communicate compassion, truth and fearlessness.
I make work to feed my brain, open my heart and develop a continuing understanding of our limitless opportunities for growth, freedom, play and vision.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, and then some...
